A US man has won a massive $US847 million ($1.43b) jackpot after the country’s Powerball lottery went two months without a winner.

The winning ticket means the anonymous New Jersey man can opt for either taking the entire $US847m jackpot in yearly payments or a one-time $US363.1m cash prize, according to the New York Post.

It is the ninth-largest US Powerball jackpot ever won, according to Powerball, narrowly edging out the historic $US842 million sum won on New Year’s Day 2024 by a Michigan lotto syndicate.

Both the one-off and yearly prize options are before tax, which means the anonymous winner will still have to hand over 24 per cent of their winnings to federal agencies and another 8 per cent to the state.

The winning numbers drawn on Wednesday night, local time, were 15, 34, 41, 53 and 56 with a red Powerball number 21.

New Jersey state law decrees that lotto-winning residents can remain anonymous indefinitely.

The draw was the first Powerball jackpot win since August 12, when another anonymous holder of a $US2 ticket took out the whopping $US1.04 billion prize.

Instead of ongoing yearly payments, that particular winner took a one-off lump sum of $US450.5 million.

“Back-to-back jackpot runs resulting in prizes of this magnitude are a testament to the excitement Powerball generates,” Stephen Durrell, chair of the Powerball Product Group and executive director of the Kansas Lottery told Fox Business.

“We’re thrilled to celebrate another life-changing win and congratulate the lucky ticket holder.”

The largest lottery jackpot in US history was won on November 7, 2022, when a Californian ticket-holder took out the $US2.04 billion Powerball prize. The next biggest win was on Christmas Eve, 2025, when another ticket-holder took out a $US1.817 billion Powerball jackpot.
