Dolly Parton funeral: Niece Lainey shares heartfelt tribute as music legend laid to rest alongside Carl Dean
An intimate service was held for the music legend who died last week, a family member has revealed.
Dolly Parton has been laid to rest alongside her long-term husband Carl Dean.
The music legend died on Tuesday at the age of 80.
In a statement to People, Parton’s representatives confirmed she had been diagnosed with cancer, although the specific type has not been disclosed.

Parton’s representatives reflected on the enormous philanthropic legacy she leaves behind, including her Imagination Library literacy program and her financial contribution towards research that helped develop the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine.
“Whether it be the hundreds of millions of books donated through her invaluable Imagination Library or funding research that helped create a lifesaving vaccine used around the world, Dolly’s unconditional love for all people was the guiding force for her lasting impact. After bravely facing a brief battle with cancer, Dolly departed her Earthly life today at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center surrounded by loved ones,” the statement concluded.
Her death prompted an enormous outpouring of grief from around the world, with musicians, celebrities and political leaders paying tribute to the woman behind some of country music’s most enduring songs.
An intimate funeral was held for Parton at Nashville’s Woodlawn Memorial Park and Mausoleum three days after her tragic death.
She was laid to rest beside her husband of 59 years, Carl Dean, who died in 2025 aged 82.
The singer’s niece Lainey Parton shared an emotional tribute on Instagram, saying she wanted to “wait until after (her) granny was laid to rest” before doing so.
“From the time I was little, my granny always had a way of making me feel like I was enough,” she wrote.
“She never made my dreams feel too big or made me feel like I couldn’t do something. She believed in me before I even knew how to believe in myself.
“Most people can think of at least one bad memory with everyone in their family.
“I honestly can’t think of one with her.
“Because she couldn’t have kids of her own, she always made us feel like we were hers.
“She loved us that way, and I’ll forever be grateful for that.”
Lainey recalled a particularly special moment with Parton, where several members of the family were involved in the recording of a 2024 hit.
“One memory I’ll always hold onto is when she asked me to sing with her on her @smokymountaindna album,” she wrote.
“I was a freshman in high school and SO nervous.
“But she had a way of making me feel like nothing bad could happen.
“She made me feel safe, confident, and like I belonged right there beside her.
The 9 to 5 legend supported her niece’s dreams, helping to launch her beauty career.
“When I told her I wanted to go to beauty school, she never questioned why I wasn’t going to college. She told me she couldn’t see me doing anything else. She financially supported me through school and helped me get my career started,” Lainey wrote.
“She didn’t just tell me to chase my dreams, she helped me get there.
She added it “still doesn’t feel real” that her aunty had died.
“I’m going to miss her voice, her laugh, her hugs, and just knowing she was there. I’m even going to miss those 4 AM calls, and I’d give anything to see her name pop up on my phone again.”
Parton was one of 12 children and hailed from rural Tennessee.
When her death was announced by her nephew and head of security, Bryan Seaver, he revealed details of Parton’s wishes.
“Dolly called me and said she wants to rest in a beautiful bed of plush cotton because, after a life wearing heavy rhinestones, she finally deserves to be comfortable and have some rest,” he said.
Parton’s family have requested donations to her Imagination Library in lieu of flowers and fans can leave tribute messages on the star’s website.
