To leave, Miguel needs to seek out his great-great-great-grandfather, a musician who seemingly abandoned his family when his great-grandmother Coco was a child. As a result, Coco’s mother had banned music from her life and every generation thereafter, even though Miguel’s greatest wish is to play guitar like his idol, Ernesto de la Cruz.

In the Land of the Dead, Miguel encounters his relatives as well as another former musician who once performed with Ernesto. He learns the importance of honouring the dead and keeping their memories alive.
Coco was widely praised for its vibrant animation, cultural authenticity to Mexican heritage and its emotionally poignant themes.
Coco is one of the most beloved films of the Pixar pantheon and was a huge success. Its $US814 million box office was backed up by a 97 per cent rating on Rotten Tomatoes and two Oscars, for best animated feature and original song.
A stage production is also in development as well as a Coco-themed ride for Disney’s California Adventure Park in Anaheim.
Pixar’s next release is in June with Elio, an original story about a kid who accidentally becomes an intergalactic ambassador for Earth when he makes contact with aliens. In 2026, there is another original film called Hoppers, about human consciousnesses being embedded inside robot animals.
After that, there are sequels for Toy Story and The Incredibles.
