Well, turns out the subtitle to Fantastic Four: First Steps has a double meaning.

There was the one we all assumed – the first FF movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe – but now the first full trailer has revealed it also means a baby’s first steps.

Sue Storm (Vanessa Kirby) is pregnant, and pending parenthood will play a significant role for not just her but partner Reed Richards (Pedro Pascal) as well as for Johnny (Joseph Quinn), who insists he and The Thing (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) will be fantastic uncles.

There’s a lot more at stake than setting up the nursery and not screwing up your baby with too much emotional baggage because extra-terrestrial threats are inbound.

The trailer reveals the first look at Julia Garner’s Silver Surfer who arrives with an ominous warning. After asking the Fantastic Four if they are the protectors of their world, she says, “Your planet is now marked for death”.

Presumably there will be some thematic parallels between protecting your baby and protecting the planet.

That wider threat comes in the form of Galactus, a giant cosmic being with a penchant for devouring worlds.

He was briefly glimpsed in the teaser trailer released in February. Here, you get a better sense of just how large when Galactus’ enormous feet are stomping around the city, with his boots measuring at least three storeys high.

The Marvel movie lands in July and will be the third movie version of the Fantastic Four characters after two previous film iterations when the screen rights were owned by Twentieth Century Fox.

Disney’s acquisition of Fox in 2019 brought the Fantastic Four under Marvel Studios. The characters are expected to be an integral part of the MCU and have already been confirmed to appear in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday film.

The film is directed by Matt Shakman (WandaVision) and also stars Ralph Ineson, John Malkovich, Natasha Lyonne, Sarah Niles, Paul Walter Hauser and Mark Gatiss.

The Fantastic Four were created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby and made their comic book debut in 1961.
