And we’re on. Production on Freaky Friday 2 has officially started with Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan on set and reporting for work.

The pair will reprise their roles as mother-and-daughter body swappers Tess and Anna from the 2003 film.

The official logline for the film reads as, “The film picks up years after Tess and Anna endured an identity crisis.

“Anna now has a daughter of her own, and a soon-to-be stepdaughter. As they navigate the myriad challenges that come when two families merge, Tess and Anna discover that lightning might indeed strike twice.”

They will be joined by their co-stars from the first movie including love interests Mark Harmon and Chad Michael Murray, as well as Lucille Soong, Stephen Tobolowsky, Rosalind Chao, Christina Vidal Mitchell and Haley Hudson.

In the 2003 Soong played the woman who gave Tess and Anna the fortune cookies which magically facilitated their body swap. Her inclusion in the cast list suggests that the sequel may use a similar plot device.

Newcomers to the Freaky Friday universe include Julia Butters, Manny Jacinto, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan and Sophia Hammons.

The sequel is due for release in 2025, 22 years after the Curtis and Lohan movie came to be a surprise hit, grossing $US160 million from a $US26 million production budget.

Lohan, 37, is on a career upswing after returning to the industry with two Netflix rom-coms, Irish Wish and Falling for Christmas, both directed by Janeen Damian. She also had a cameo in the film adaptation of the Mean Girls musical, playing the moderator during the mathletes competition.

Freaky Friday marks her first starring role in a cinema release since Paul Schrader’s The Canyons in 2013.

Curtis is coming off the back of her Oscars win for Everything Everywhere All At Once and a memorable guest appearance in the second season of acclaimed series The Bear.

Freaky Friday 2 will be directed by Nisha Ganatra (Late Night, The High Note) from a screenplay by Jordan Weiss (Dollface and upcoming rom-com Sweethearts).

Freaky Friday was adapted from a 1972 book by author Mary Rodgers and the 2003 film was the fifth movie in Disney’s Freaky Friday franchise. The first adaptation was a 1976 film starring Jodie Foster and Barbara Harris.
