How’s that for synchronicity? A sequel to a reunion.

Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion is that much closer to a confirmed sequel.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino are in final negotiations to reprise their roles from the 1990s favourite.

The project already has Tim Federle (Better Nate Than Never, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series) attached as director and there is a script from Robin Schiff, who penned the original 1997 film. It even has the same producer, Laurence Mark, involved.

THR sources also said, if contracts are signed and everything comes together, filming is expected to start in June, potentially in Los Angeles.

Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion was a comedy about two women who decide to make up stories about successful lives at their 10-year reunion.

In order to impress their former classmates, Romy and Michele tell everyone they invented Post-Its, turning up to the event in power suits and a borrowed Jaguar. But the mean girls at school are still the mean girls of adulthood, and their story comes undone.

But by reclaiming their authentic selves, they prove to everyone that success can be defined by other parameters.

The film also starred Janeane Garofalo, Alan Cumming, Camryn Manheim and Elaine Hendrix.

The movie was a modest success when it was released but over time has become a nostalgic hit, recognised for its warm humour, vibrant costumes and a soundtrack pumped with 1980s icons including Belinda Carlisle, Tears for Fears, Culture Club and The Gos-Gos.

There was a TV prequel movie in 2005 called Romy and Michele: In the Beginning which starred Katherine Heigl and Alexandra Breckenridge.
