Screen Actors Guild Awards 2026: Huge snubs as Oscar favourites shut out of nominations

The Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations were announced overnight, and the mixed-bag list is generating a lot of chatter and consternation.
The awards, which have been renamed the Actor Awards, didn’t nominate any non-English language films or performances. The shut-out is notable because this year’s crop of contenders has a particularly strong contingent of international films that are expected to do well across this awards season.
Films including Sentimental Value from Finland and its stars Stellan Skarsgard, Renate Reinsve and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas, No Other Choice from South Korea and its lead Lee Byung-hun, and The Secret Agent from Brazil and its star Wagner Moura, are all considered great chances for Oscar nominations.

It stands in contrast to the Golden Globes nominations, which are to be awarded next week, where non-English language films and performances did very well. Of the 10 movies nominated across its two best film categories, half are international films.
Last year, SAG nominated the Mexico-set, Spanish-language film Emilia Perez for three awards while in 2020, the South Korean hit Parasite won the ensemble award.
Instead, this year, all the nominees hail from the US and other English-speaking territories, including Ireland, the UK and Australia.

Australians Rose Byrne and Jacob Elordi were both nominated for their films, If I Had Legs I’d Kick You and Frankenstein, respectively, while Sarah Snook was nominated in a TV category.
Frankenstein was also nominated for an ensemble cast award, even though the film’s performances aren’t considered to be the Guillermo del Toro movie’s strong point.
One Battle After Another is the leading contender with a record-breaking seven nominations, collecting nods for its ensemble cast, individual actors Leonardo DiCaprio, Chase Infiniti, Teyana Taylor, Benicio del Toro and Sean Penn, and its stunt team.
Ryan Coogler’s Sinners also did better than expected, picking up not just nominations for Michael B. Jordan and the ensemble, but also for actors Wunmi Mosaku and Miles Caton.
Bugonia and its stars Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons were also something of a surprise inclusion. The heat has largely fallen off that film since awards season started.

The SAGs are voted on by the 160,000 members of its union but the nominations are determined by a 25,000-strong committee.
The SAGs are something of a bellwether for the Oscars because there are more actors among the Academy’s 10,000 Oscar-voting members than any other segment. But the Oscars body has a higher proportion of international voters than SAGs.
The SAGs ceremony will be on March 2.
