Are you ready to turn it up to 11? Who needs an Oasis reunion when you can bring back together Spinal Tap?

Sony has released the full trailer for Spinal Tap II: The End Continues, which will be out in September, 41 years after the original film befuddled some audiences who thought the whole thing was a real documentary about real English rockers.

The core four of Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, Harry Shearer and Rob Reiner are returning on camera and behind the scenes – Reiner, like he did in 1984, also directed the film while all are credited as screenwriters. If the sequel is anything like the original, a lot of the dialogue was improvised during filming.

The 1984 film was centred on a heavy metal group, and satirising their outlandish behaviour while a doco group followed their antics as they tried to release a new album and launch a tour.

That film had a cavalcade of cameos from the likes of Billy Crystal, Anjelica Huston, Paul Shaffer, Dana Carvey and Ed Begley Jr. The tradition continues with the sequel signing up Paul McCartney, Elton John, Garth Brooks and Questlove among more.

In the trailer, McCartney is in the film talking about the group’s impact, Elton is dueting with them while Questlove can be seen turning down the gig as the band’s drummer. Spinal Tap has a tendency to lose their drummers – only 11 of them – in mysterious ways.

The Is Spinal Tap was one of the most influential comedies of its era, and set the standard for the mockumentary genre.

Guest went on to write and direct beloved mockumentaries Waiting for Guffman, Best in Show, A Mighty Wind and For Your Consideration.
