We’re eight months out from the release of Disney’s first new Star Wars movie in seven years, Mandalorian and Grogu, and patient fans have finally been rewarded with the teaser trailer.

The marketing campaign is officially on, although it had the unfortunate timing of being dropped online about six hours before the house of mouse reinstated Jimmy Kimmel to his show, so there were widescale accusations that Disney was trying to distract from its PR woes with Baby Yoda, adorable as ever.

While schedules for trailer releases are usually locked in advance, likely well before Disney took Kimmel off air this past week, it didn’t stop the flood of comments beneath the Mandalorian and Grogu video on YouTube and across social media.

With Kimmel now due to be back on air on Tuesday night, US time, Mandalorian and Grogu should have some clear air and not get dragged down by a groundswell of Disney boycotts.

The film is a sequel to three seasons of the popular streaming series The Mandalorian, and features Pedro Pascal as the one of the two titular characters, while Grogu, nicknamed Baby Yoda before his name was revealed in the second season, is brought to life through puppetry and animatronics.

The official logline is, “The evil Empire has fallen, and Imperial warlords remain scattered throughout the galaxy.

“As the fledgling New Republic works to protect everything the Rebellion fought for, they have enlisted the help of legendary Mandalorian bounty hunter Din Djarin and his young apprentice, Grogu.”

The trailer introduces Sigourney Weaver’s character, Ward, a leader of the New Republic’s Delphi Rangers and a former Rebellion pilot, while you also get a glimpse of Rotta the Hutt, son of Jabba, and voiced by Jeremy Allen White.

The film also promises the return of the Razor Crest, Mando’s ship which had been blown up in the second season, so this must be a new version. You also see Grogu in the company of Azellans, the same alien species as Babu Frik, a character from The Rise of Skywalker.

Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni, the creative heads behind The Mandalorian series, co-wrote the screenplay for the feature, with Favreau director. Ludwig Goransson, who composed the now-iconic Mandalorian theme tune, is on board too.

Look, it may be that The Mandalorian and Grogu ends up being a supercharged episode of TV on the big screen, but don’t forget, you love these two characters, and Baby Yoda (he swims now!) is ridiculously adorable. So you’re going to see it no matter what.
