With two months and two weeks to go, The Odyssey has released a new trailer that goes through the beats of what to expect from Christopher Nolan’s swords-and-sandals epic.

The Odyssey is one of the most anticipated films of 2026, and that’s not an exaggeration because Nolan is now one of those few filmmakers who is a household name by himself.

The Brit was already incredibly well regarded after a string of commercial and creative hits including the Batman trilogy, Inception and Memento, but his stock really rose after Oppenheimer, which made almost $US1 billion at the box office and won seven Oscars.

Many eyes have been watching The Odyssey’s production process, hoping for another Nolan masterpiece.

The latest trailer is more conventional in how it sets up the film, highlighting key story beats and introducing core characters including Odysseus (Matt Damon), the King of Ithaca who spent (2800-year-old spoiler alert) a decade trying to return home from the Trojan War.

Home is where wife Penelope (Anne Hathaway) and Telemachus (Tom Holland) are, and with Odysseus’s combined 20-year absence (the Trojan War spanned 10 years), there has been something of a power vacuum in the kingdom.

Many suitors are vying for Penelope’s hand – and Odysseus’s throne – including the ambitious Antinous (Robert Pattinson).

Odysseus’s journey will take him all over the Mediterranean Sea, crossing paths with the likes of Calypso (Charlize Theron), and there are snippets of them together in the trailer.

Other cast members in the large ensemble include Himesh Patel, John Leguizamo, Lupita Nyong’o, Benny Safdie, Jon Bernthal, Zendaya, Mia Goth, Will Yun Lee, Elliot Page, Samantha Morton, Corey Hawkins, Jovan Adepo and James Remar.

It’s a reunion for Nolan and some of his actors, many of whom he has worked with before including Damon (Interstellar and Oppenheimer), Hathaway (Interstellar and The Dark Knight Rises), Pattinson (Tenet), Patel (Tenet) and Page (Inception).

Filming took place in 2025 across locations including Greece, Italy, Morocco, Iceland and Scotland, and Nolan and his frequent cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema shot The Odyssey on IMAX film.

The production budget is reported to be $US250 million.

The Odyssey is in cinemas on July 16
