The new film, titled I Never Forget What You Did Last Summer, will see Prinze Jr, 48, reprise his role as Ray Bronson.
However, 47-year-old Gellar’s character, Helen Shivers, was killed off in the original 1997 film.
Gellar, the star of the cult 1990s TV series Buffy The Vampire Slayer met Prinze on the set of I Know What You Did Last Summer.
They initially began dating by accident when they had plans for dinner with a mutual friend who then cancelled.
Although neither of them was “into marriage,” they tied the knot in Mexico that year.
“One day, I just knew we were gonna get married and I knew I was gonna propose. I didn’t know when or how,” Prinze Jr told People in 2020.
“And so I did and fortunately, she was on the same page. My instincts were correct.”
They expanded their family years later welcoming daughter Charlotte in 2009 and son Rocky in 2012.
Prinze Jr recently opened up about the secret to their marriage longevity in an interview with the Oldish podcast.
He explained they avoided paparazzi as much as possible.
“I don’t know how deliberate (other celebrities) are in trying to avoid that BS,” he said.
“I know how easy it’s been for us because I don’t go anywhere. I don’t go to parties.
“People don’t see Sarah and I out and about at the popular places.”
Meanwhile, not much is known about I Never Forget What You Did Last Summer.
Thor: Love and Thunder writer Jennifer Kaytin Robinson has been confirmed to direct the project.
Up-and-coming actors Gabriette Bechtel, Chase Sui Wonders, Madelyn Cline, Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers and Jonah Haur-King have all been cast in lead roles.
Original star Ryan Phillippe, whose character was killed off in the 1997 film, won’t be returning.
It’s also unclear if another original co-star Jennifer Love Hewitt has signed on.
The horror film is expected to be released next year through Sony Pictures.
