En Vogue topped the music charts with their catchy hits like ‘Free Your Mind’ and ‘Hold On’ in the 1990s.

But now, one of their original members Dawn Robinson has revealed she has been living in her car for the past three years.

Taking to YouTube last week, Robinson revealed her dire circumstances in a clip titled “YOUR NEW LIFE IS IN THE SCARY”.

“If you had said to me while I was in En Vogue: ‘You’ll be living in your car, one day,’ I’d be like: ‘Huh, no, I’m always gonna have an apartment. I can’t live in my car. How can I do that?’” she said in the clip, filmed inside her car.

“We say that we can’t do certain things before we even know we’re capable.”

Robinson revealed she had been previously living with her parents in the US city of Las Vegas, until she had a falling out with her mother which initially saw her start sleeping in her car.

Then, Robinson moved in with her “co-manager”. However, she said when she arrived at the apartment she found there wasn’t enough room for her and her pet dog.

The Grammy-nominated singer then started sleeping in a hotel for eight months. She claimed any apartment she was interested in would be rejected by her “co-manager”.

“I told my assistant one day I have been researching car life, this whole community of people that live in their cars…in their RVs, and a whole community of people that live in vans… And I loved what I was seeing,” Robinson said.

“I just thought, wow, these people, I can do that.”

Robinson said after she made the decision to live in her car, she drove to Malibu, where she settled in the vehicle. Despite being “scared” the first night, she settled in quickly.

“I got to know what to do in my car and how to do it, like how to cover my windows. And you don’t talk to certain people. You’re careful of telling people that you’re alone, as a woman, especially, and that I’m a celebrity,” she said.

“I don’t just divulge that to people. If you don’t know who I am, I’m not telling you that part.”

Robinson explained she wasn’t looking for sympathy. The singer explained it also wasn’t a publicity stunt.

She said she was experiencing the “dark night of the soul”, where she was in the midst of separating herself from family and friends.

Robinson added she needed to go through this “alone” and “without anyone’s judgement”.

“People are gonna call you crazy, and that’s okay,” Robinson said.

“Maybe you are. I’m crazy and I’m also proud of myself. I know that none of these people who are calling me crazy could do what I’ve done.”
