Over his career, which spanned more than six decades, Sir Stewart worked on more than 150 films and television productions.
He was best known for his roles as Jean-Luc Picard in the Star Trek franchise and Professor X in the X-Men film series.

Marvel Studios shared a heartfelt tribute on Instagram, honouring the actor who brought “extraordinary grace, intelligence, and humanity” to Professor X.
“He was a singular talent, a generous collaborator, and a true gentleman,” it read.

“Our hearts go out to his wife Sunny, his children, his friends, and the countless fans around the world whose lives he touched with his art.”
The Star Trek series ran for seven seasons and, after its end in 1994, spawned four films.
Outside of sci-fi, the actor was known for his Shakespeare performances.
Sir Stewart’s death comes two days after Star Trek co-star Walter Koenig died, aged 90, of old age.
