Harry Potter TV series: HBO drops latest trailer for new screen adaptation and fans don’t know how to react

HBO has just dropped the latest teaser trailer for the much-anticipated Harry Potter TV series, and fans don’t quite know how to react.

The network had earlier announced the adaptation would be a decade-long journey with a “degree of depth and detail” not yet seen, and on Wednesday shared its most extensive look yet at the debut season that follows JK Rowling’s first novel, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.

Released on YouTube, it offers a deeper dive into the lives of the beloved central trio of characters, casting Dominic McLaughlin as Harry, Arabella Stanton as Hermione, and Alastair Stout in the role of Ron Weasley.

The trailer, which followed an initial teaser in March, touches on key moments including Harry’s encounter with the sorting hat, Ron’s home dynamic at The Burrow and Hermione’s experience boarding the Hogwarts Express.

It is expected the first season will be eight episodes, with HBO promising the series will feature never-before-seen passages from the book that were not adapted for the screen in the eight films.

However, despite the longer-form storytelling and general fanfare around the series, loyal followers who had grown up with the stories are simply unsure how to feel about it.

“Its like seeing my own house with somebody else’s furniture, I need time with this,” one person said.

“I reserve judgement until I see it. However, cautiously optimistic,” another wrote.

“Kinda weird to see this when the films are still so ingrained in our consciousness,” one more added.

Other fans expressed their desires to see more emotions or traits from key characters that had been expressed in the celebrated novels.

“This may sound goofy but I hope they show more of Harry’s angry emotional side as he grows up, like the books. That angst that lies just beneath the surface when you’re growing up. That’s so super relatable, and with more time to explore the characters, they should really be able to dig into that,” one fan suggested.

“Her voice is so good for Hermione, she’s just as snarky as I hoped!!” another wrote, in reference to the casting of Stanton.

Some devout followers were in denial over the notion their favourite characters had been re-cast.

“Alan Rickman will forever be Severus Snape,” one declared.

Viewers can expect to see a combination of experienced and emerging stars play other central roles.

John Lithgow has been cast as Dumbledore, with Snape played by Paapa Essiedu, and Nick Frost in the role of Hagrid.

Mark Mylod will direct the series, known for his work on hit shows Succession and Game of Thrones.

The HBO Original Series Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone premieres this Christmas on HBO Max.
