US Wheel of Fortune announcer Jim Thornton suspended amid investigation after alleged airline incident

American Wheel of Fortune announcer Jim Thornton has been suspended amid an investigation from the network, with the iconic game show looking to re-cast his role.

In a statement released this week, Sony Pictures Television confirmed the long-time TV announcer would be stood down as it investigated allegations made against them.

“We have recently been made aware of allegations concerning Jim Thornton,” the company said.

“He has been suspended from Wheel of Fortune and we are recasting while we conduct a thorough investigation.”

Hosted by Ryan Seacrest and Vanna White, Thornton had been the programme’s announcer since 2011.

While no additional details of the investigation have since been shared, TMZ reported the figure had been involved in an alleged incident on a commercial flight in May.

The outlet said a passenger had complained to a flight attendant about the announcer, and that the pilot had arranged for law enforcement to meet him at the arrival gate, though he was not apprehended.

He was said to be wearing a “Wheel” jacket at the time.

“On May 14, American Airlines Flight 1276 was met by law enforcement upon arrival at Los Angeles International Airport following concerns reported by a customer onboard,” American Airlines told TMZ.

As an experienced voice talent veteran, Thornton had earlier featured on episodes of popular TV show The Price Is Right, and is credited for his work on The Soup, and The Cleveland Show.

He also served as a commercial announcer in the animated film Monsters Inc, and as a radio news presenter.
