Disney has found it’s Rapunzel, and it’s not the Hollywood star you might’ve guessed.

After months of speculation, Disney has finally revealed who will be playing the coveted role of Rapunzel in the new live-action adaptation of its hit 2010 animated movie-musical, Tangled.

The rising star already has an impressive screen resume, starring as Rachel Roth on HBO Max’s Titans, but now she’s in for a new challenge as she gets ready to begin production on Disney’s Tangled.

The casting was announced on Disney’s Instagram, where head shots of Croft and her co-star to be Milo Manheim were posted with the caption: “Teagan Croft and Milo Manheim are Rapunzel and Flynn Rider in the live-action reimagining of Disney’s Tangled. Coming only to theatres.”

Manheim, who will be playing Croft’s “Prince Charming”, is no stranger to Hollywood. He plays Zed in the Disney Channel musical franchise, Zombies, and is the son of award-winning actress Camryn Manheim.

Croft made her television debut in 2016, with the much-loved Aussie soap opera, Home and Away, and went on to star in the drama True Spirit, which follows the true story of Aussie sailor Jessica Watson who is famous for becoming the youngest person to sail solo around the world at age 16.

The up-and-coming star beat out some big Hollywood names for the role, including model Gigi Hadid and pop star Sabrina Carpenter, who were rumoured to be playing Rapunzel.

Aussie filmmaker Michael Gracey, will be directing the new Tangled movie which is expected to start filming later this year.

Gracey is best known for his work directing The Greatest Showman starring Hugh Jackman and the Robbie Williams biopic, Better Man.

The live-action adaptation has a lot to live up to, with the original Tangled film grossing over $879 million in the box office and spawning two follow ups—2012 short film Tangled Ever After and the Disney Channel series Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure.

Now that the two lead roles are secured, speculation over who will play the film’s main villain, Mother Gothel, is underway.

Scarlett Johansson’s name was initially thrown around, however she is now tied up with a reboot of The Exorcist and The Batman Part II, leaving the role open.

Agatha All Along star, Kathryn Hahn, has long been a fan-favourite and according to Deadline, she may actually be in talks with Disney to take on the position, however this has not yet been confirmed.

Tangled currently has no release date.
