We finally have a definitive connection between The Office US and its upcoming spin-off, rumoured to be titled The Paper.

Oscar Nunez, who played the eternally put-upon accountant Oscar in nine seasons of the American series, has joined the cast of the spin-off. He will reprise his character, who has presumably moved from Scranton to wherever in the “mid-west” the upcoming series is set.

At the end of The Office in 2013, Oscar was having a tilt at a career in politics, running for a state seat in Pennsylvania. The production has yet to reveal how the character will fit into the new series.

The show exists in the same universe as the Dunder Mifflin folks and also through the documentary crew which followed The Office US characters. Now that crew is embedded with a “dying” newspaper.

The spin-off was officially greenlit last year with actors Domhnall Gleeson and The White Lotus season two stand-out Sabrina Impacciatore cast to lead the ensemble.

The rest of the cast includes Chelsea Frei, Melvin Gregg, Ramona Young, Tim Key, Gbemisola Ikumelo and Alex Edelman. Like the earlier series, several of its onscreen talent will also be part of the show’s writers room.

The Office US creator Greg Daniels, who adapted the show from the British original, is onboard as an executive producer alongside Michael Koman.

The spin-off was commissioned by US streaming platform Peacock, whose shows are available in Australia primarily on Binge but has also been featured on Stan and Prime Video.
