Pineapple on pizza has long been debated in Australia but now, there’s a new fruit topping that’s dividing the masses.

Bubba Pizza, found in Melbourne and Adelaide, is serving up a new wild flavour at select stores and people are both outraged and curious.

“There’s a new flavour at Bubba… We’re quite over ‘the pineapple on pizza debate’,” they said in a video on Instagram.

“So, we brought a new fruit to the table. Ham and orange.”

Yes, you read that correctly — chunky slices of orange are the new topping flavour sensation. It’s essentially like the classic Hawaiian pizza but instead of pineapple it’s orange. The pizza features a tomato base, Bubba’s original smoked leg ham, fresh orange and mozzarella.

Bubba Pizza’s ham and orange option was launched as a summer special and is still sending the internet into a spin.

The flavour was thought up by Carlton Football Club player —formerly Greater Western Sydney player — Cooper Hamilton, and Bubba’s Pizza ran with it unashamedly.

Why orange, you ask? Well, it’s all about bringing pizza lovers together, according to Bubba’s Pizza.

“It’s super juicy and super sweet,” a Bubba’s Pizza employee spruiks on Instagram.

“We understand Italians don’t like pineapple on pizza. It’s been well documented. But we know that you love oranges. It’s like your country’s favourite fruit, right? Especially down in Sicily.”

At the time of the launch, Bubba’s Pizza were offering anyone with an Italian passport the opportunity to try the pizza for free.

“We found the common ground,” the employee continued. “We found the fruit that’s going to bring everyone together. And it’s orange.”

Other ads for the new flavour called on pizza enthusiasts to “break the pineapple divide and try orange instead”.

But the Reddit world wasn’t so sure, with one labelling the flavour “a culinary abomination”.

“Orange can never compliment pizza,” one wrote. “I’m out.”

“Sounds revolting,” wrote another. “But if somebody likes it, OK, go wild. It won’t affect me at all.”

Another simply said: “Straight to jail”.

“With this one simple trick, pineapple-on-pizza supporters and haters have been united,” another joked about the pizza’s aim.

But there were some pizza lovers a little more open to the idea, with many saying they would at least try it.

“So, I’m pro pineapple on pizza. [I] find the sweetness a great add. I get people are texture people,” one wrote.

“I’d try a slice but I’m not willing to pay money to try it,” another said.

Another questioned: “Is this so far away from a prosciutto and orange salad?”

While one user went into a little more detail about flavour combinations that justify the pairing.

“People make orange glazed ham all the time,” they wrote. “It’s not uncommon to find it in South American pork braises and European confit variations. [It’s] Also used in a lot of Chinese, Korean and Thai marinades and stir fries.

“There would be a tonne I don’t know about as well, just a few examples of its compatibility when pairing with meats.

“I’m not justifying this pizza, but it wouldn’t be bad — Just different.”
