Ever since shutting up shop in four years ago, fans of the iconic buffet restaurant chain Sizzler have been pining for its famous cheese toastie.

Demand for a comeback was clear after KIIS 97.3FM hosted a hugely successful pop-up Sizzler restaurant at a Brisbane Coffee Club last week.

On the back of the event, The Coffee Club has announced it will be selling Sizzler’s cheese toasties at all its stores for two weeks.

Beginning on Wednesday, the cheese toasties are now available for $4.99.

The Coffee Club chief executive Scott Meneilly said the return of the item was about “celebrating a cultural icon”.

“We’ve gone to great lengths to bring the original Sizzler Cheese Toast to The Coffee Club,” he said.

“Everyone knows Sizzler’s Cheese Toast, it’s been an Aussie favourite for decades and a comeback not to be missed.”

Sizzler, which was owned by Collins Foods, closed its doors after 35 years in 2020 due to impacts from COVID-19.

“This has been an incredibly difficult decision and not one we’ve made lightly, especially given the impact it will have on our dedicated Sizzler staff and customers in Australia,” Collins Foods chief executive Drew O’Malley said at the time.

Sizzler was once one of Australia’s most popular restaurant chains after opening in Kedron in Brisbane in 1985.

In 2006, all Sizzler restaurants temporarily suspended salad bar service after foreign objects, thought to be rat poison, were found in food in the Toowong restaurant.
