Miley Cyrus reveals she almost quit music after suffering ‘traumatic, excruciating’ medical emergency mid-show

Miley Cyrus has revealed she experienced a “traumatic” health scare during a major New Year’s Eve performance.
The US pop singer opened up about the medical emergency in an interview with Zane Lowe, detailing how she faced “extremely excruciating” pain when performing with her godmother, Dolly Parton, during their 2023 New Year’s Eve special.
“I had a pretty traumatic experience on a show that I was doing with Lorne (Michaels) when I was doing my New Year’s show,” Cyrus revealed.

“It was really, really hard on me.”
The Grammy winner said that after the health scare, she considered quitting her music career.
But a conversation with SNL creator, Michaels changed that.
“I had dinner with Lorne and he said something that now has stuck with me,” she told Lowe.
“He goes, ‘six months, everybody has six months to feel sorry for themselves and then we start to rebuild’.
“He’s like, ‘You have no idea how many artists have sat in this chair and told me they were quitting music. Everyone does this, everyone has these traumatic experiences,” Cyrus said.
The hit song maker also opened up about suffering from Reinke’s Edema, a vocal cord condition.
“I have this very large polyp on my vocal cord, which has given me a lot of the tone and the texture that has made me who I am,” she said.
“But it’s extremely difficult to perform with it, because it’s like running a marathon with ankle weights.”
Cyrus hinted that she could be done with touring for good after saying her priority is to keep herself “mentally, physically, spiritually, and emotionally well”.
“It’s not that I don’t want to. I put on a tour concept every week — I just can’t risk damaging my voice.”
Cyrus last toured in 2014 for her album Bangerz, and in 2019, she performed at major festivals including Glastonbury and Lollapalooza.
Her highly anticipated new album, Something Beautiful, is set for release on May 30.
