'A piece of Australian cultural history': The former waterfront home of artist Marianne Baillieu is for sale

It's not just the eastern suburbs that are home to grand manors and estates, Melbourne's inner west lays claim to some of Melbourne's incredible historic homes.
Located on one of Williamstown's most iconic waterfront streets, 'Tarneit' is one such property.
Once the home of Marianne Baillieu, a celebrated painter and founder of Melbourne's iconic Realities Gallery, the property holds an important place in Australia's cultural history.

After selling her gallery to focus on painting, Ms Baillieu purchased the home in 1980 for $145,000 and lived in it until her passing in 2012.
For three decades, the historic home served as her painting studio and a place for artists and creatives to meet.

According to a statement from Ray White, the property hosted a "vibrant cultural salon where Australia's most significant artists gathered".
It gained further significance when it served as the main location for Paul Cox's 1984 film My First Wife.

Ms Baillieu's son, chairman and investor James Baillieu, recalls fond memories of the home.
"The house is so close to the water that ships seemed to sail right into our front garden," he said.

Set on a large 1,164-square-metre block, the waterfront Edwardian home features five bedrooms, one bathroom, a grand foyer with decorative timber detailing, and multiple living zones.
The home also contains many original period details including pressed metal ceilings, leadlight windows, hardwood flooring and fireplaces.

Also on the grounds is a basalt swimming pool with bayside views, undercover patio and separate two-level studio/loft with room for a workshop and additional storage.
Currently listed with a price guide of $6.5 million to $7 million, director and auctioneer Joanne Royston said Tarneit is an opportunity for buyers to "own a piece of Australian cultural history".

"The combination of architectural significance, cultural heritage, and prime waterfront location makes this an exceptional offering," she said.
While Ms Royston acknowledges the local prestige market has been "relatively quiet" over the past few months, she anticipates buyers from other bayside suburbs like St Kilda and Port Melbourne will be drawn to the waterfront location.

The property is located opposite the anchorage marina and seafood restaurant Pier Farm, and within walking distance of Williamstown's best shops, cafes and restaurants.
