In beloved Australian film The Castle, Darryl Kerrigan famously acknowledges the serenity while staying at the family holiday house in Bonnie Doon — “Ah the serenity. So much serenity.”

One look at Little Green Island, and it’s easy to imagine that the former owners would have found themselves thinking the exact same thing.

Located off the coast of Mackay, Little Green Island is a private tropical paradise only a short boat ride away.

The main property on the island was originally designed by architect Tone Wheeler for author and physician Dr. Edward de Bono.

The island provided a location for the celebrated creative thinker to hold “corporate think tanks”.

Now on the market, the property is currently owned by film producer and stepson of C.S Lewis, Douglas Gresham and served as inspiration for his work on The Chronicles of Narnia films.

“My children have grown up looking forward to their next school holidays on ‘The Island’ where they have brought a few special friends with them to share their magical secret adventure world,” Gresham says.

“They have spent limitless hours on the beach, in rock pools, in the ocean, adventures climbing through cliffs and ravines high above sea level.”

Purchased by Gresham in 2009, the island encompasses 63 acres with a main dwelling and caretaker’s lodge.

The primary residence is a modern take on the Queenslander architectural style and perfectly combines indoor and outdoor living.

Expansive windows and large sliding doors lead out onto a wraparound deck with views of the Coral Sea and lush greenery.

Equipped with three bedrooms and three bathrooms, the residence also boasts a swimming pool and deck with unparalleled views of ocean and rainforest.

But it’s perhaps the natural offerings of the island that provide the most appeal.

On the island there are beautiful beaches, a paperbark forest, rock pools and cliffs. The proximity to local wildlife is another big drawcard with sightings of whales, dolphins, dugongs, sea turtles and wallabies available.

“My wife and I have enjoyed watching our children being creative with all the space and beauty, sometimes participating in their fun,” says Gresham. “There have been many great family times over the years.”

Listing agent, and director of Harcourts MackTown, Tina Sander describes the property as a “once in a lifetime” opportunity and says that the owners “wish to pass Little Green Island onto someone else to enjoy this incredible north Queensland lifestyle.”

“It is one of the very few freehold islands on the Eastern seaboard of Australia,” says Sander. “It is the epitome of true island living, blended perfectly with luxury and exclusivity.”

After owning the island for 15 years, the Gresham family are ready to say their final goodbyes in the hope that it will attract a buyer who will also treasure this slice of paradise.

“The Island is a place of true beauty and discovery, and for making new magical memories,” says Gresham. “The whole family will absolutely miss it for many reasons.”
