The former home of Sir Robert Menzies, Australia’s longest-serving prime minister, has been listed for sale with a price guide of $8.3 to $9 million.

The heritage-listed property, located at 8-10 Howard Street, Kew, was built circa 1912 and served as the family home for Sir Robert, his wife Dame Patti, and their children Kenneth, Ian, and Heather during his first term as prime minister in the early years of World War II.

The property, which has been described as a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity” in the listing, is situated in the sought-after Studley Park precinct.

The home was last on the market in 2018 and sold for $7.75 million.

Located on a spacious 1874-square-metre block, the residence is renowned for its English and Arts and Crafts influences, with original features such as a tessellated tile veranda, leadlight windows, and decorative cornices.

Modern amenities complement the property’s heritage, including a heated swimming pool, wine cellar, and night-lit tennis court.

Notably, the property once boasted an air raid shelter, a relic of the wartime era.

James Tostevin, Chris Barrett and Scarlett Hang from Marshall White Boroondara are managing the sale of the property.

Kew Historical Society records state that the Menzies family purchased the home in 1926, and lived there for two decades before selling it to Dame Patti Menzies brother-in-law in 1949.

The family later relocated to Malvern, where Sir Robert Menzies spent his retirement. He passed away in 1978 at the age of 83 after suffering a heart attack.

8-10 Howard Street, Kew is currently listed for sale by James Tostevin, Chris Barrett and Scarlett Hang from Marshall White Boroondara. The price guide is $8.3 million to $9 million. Expressions of interest close on Tuesday March 11 at 5pm.
