Anthony Albanese is expected to fly into Singapore, and possibly Malaysia, after the Easter break to shore up fuel supply agreements from Australia’s oil-exporting neighbours.

Earlier this week The Nightly learnt planning was underway for the Prime Minister to soon meet his Singaporean counterpart Lawrence Wong, who he holds formal face-to-face talks with each year.

Last week both leaders spoke over the phone to discuss the Middle East conflict and its impact on global energy supplies, before issuing a joint statement reaffirming “the flow of essential goods including petroleum oils” between their countries.

Mr Wong declared that “Australia is a key source of LNG for Singapore, and we value this partnership,” while also promising that his nation “will keep our markets open and do our part to ensure supply chains run smoothly during this period of uncertainty.”

Singapore is considered a critical fuel partner for Australia, acting as a major supplier of refined petrol, diesel, and jet fuel, with over 80% of this country’s supplies imported from Asian refiners.

Government sources have confirmed the Prime Minister is intending to head to south-east Asia at some point after the Easter long-weekend, but insist final plans are not yet “locked in”.

On Wednesday Singapore’s Energy Minister Dr Tan See Leng came to Canberra to discuss joint efforts on the fuel crisis with Foreign Minister Penny Wong.

The governments of Singapore and Malaysia have so far not commented on Mr Albanese’s impending visit.
