Dramatic crash as seaplane flips during takeoff in rural Gold Coast

A 62-year-old pilot crashed his light plane on a Gold Coast airstrip after losing control during takeoff.

A flying boat flipped upside down during takeoff on Saturday evening with the pilot miraculously escaping major injury.

The 62-year-old man and recreational pilot was flying solo when he lost control while trying to take off on a rural airstrip in the Gold Coast.

The crash occurred in Norwell and the man was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital with minor injuries.

The incident was reported and the Aviation Safety Network said the private plane was a Progressive Aerodyne Searey, or a flying boat, and is severely damaged.

The exact cause of the crash is unknown and will not be formally investigated because the plan was on a recreational register, according to a statement from Australian Transport Safety Bureau shared to 7NEWS.
