Thousands take to the streets across the country in anti-immigration protests, with some clashing with demonstrators in counter-rallies.

Independent senator Jacqui Lambie has unleashed on those who attended so-called March for Australia rallies at the weekend, saying “you have to ask what sort of people are standing up with those neo-Nazis”.

Thousands turned out to the nationwide demonstrations on Sunday.

In Melbourne, riot police were deployed after clashes erupted between participants and counter-protesters.

Senator Lambie said on Monday she found it “extremely divisive”.

“If you want to hang out with neo-Nazis, be my guest,” she told Sky News.

“But I will say this, those people that are out there going against them, don’t waste your time.

“Stay at home with your loved ones and spend your precious time there because, quite frankly, what you’re doing is you’re putting our police officers … as meat in the middle of a sandwich.”

She said that not showing up to counter the “thugs” gives “police greater control out in those streets”.

“It’s not worth your while, let them go out there, let them do what they need to do,” Senator Lambie said.

“But seriously, you have to ask what sort of people are standing up with those neo-Nazis and the thuggery that is going on because you’re embarrassing the country and you’re embarrassing yourselves.

“And quite frankly, I think most Australians have had a gutful of it.”
