Two people whose bodies were found near the rocks at a popular beach in Sydney are believed to have been rock fishers.

They are believed to have been swept into the water at Little Bay Beach early on Sunday, according to NSW Surf Life Saving.

Emergency services were called to Little Bay for a welfare check about 11.10am Sunday.

Police searched the area and found “a number of items” on nearby rocks.

“A short time later, a body was found near the rocks,” police said in a statement.

A second body was then found near the rocks about 1.40pm.

The two people are yet to be formally identified.

No further details are known at this stage, police said.

A police operation is still underway in the area.
