Farrell says Greens brought election result on themselves
Federal Minister for Trade and Tourism Don Farrell says the Greens Party and leader Adam Bandt contributed to their own undoing during the Federal election.
“I was confident on the work we’d done in the previous three years, especially in my space of trade, that we’d be returned, and the return would be a majority,” Mr Farell told the ABC .
“But even I couldn’t believe the results as they came in on Saturday night.
“I think the Greens have suffered because so many times in the last parliament they blocked sensible policies of the Albanese government.
“They voted with the coalition in the Senate to block, for instance, legislation on housing, sensible housing policy, and I think they’ve paid the political price for that.”
Why Teal-slayer Tim Wilson should be next Liberal leader
Latika M Bourke reports Teal-slayer Tim Wilson is a changed man.
Gone is the arrogance and ego that used to dominate his public persona, and in its place is a far more humble, tenacious and resilient sounding character.
As he paused to stifle the tears in accepting victory in his old seat of Goldstein in Melbourne, he recalled how the outlook appeared for him and the Liberals just three years ago.
“We were written off,” he told reporters at a press conference in Brighton.
“Three years ago people said that Goldstein could not be won.
“I was written off, the Liberal party was written off in this part of the world.”
Ley gets bid boost as former Premier’s voice support
Sussan Ley’s battle to win the leadership of the Liberal Party has been given a big boost as several senior Liberal powerbrokers and former leaders voiced support for her.
Jeff Kennett, Nick Greiner and Barry O’Farrell have named her as the best choice to lead the Coalition after the disastrous election defeat.
The former premiers told the SMH they feel she is the best person to lead the Liberal’s as they try to mend the damage done in the recent campaign.
“I am not one of those who believe that the future for the party is lost or necessarily will take two elections before we are again a viable alternative,” Jeff Kennett said.
“I would very much endorse Sussan Ley coming in as the leader.”
