The Prime Minister said the normal 52¢ per litre excise tax would be reduced by 16¢, instead of the current 26¢ per litre announced in March as a result of fuel hikes caused by the Middle East conflict.
In addition, the heavy vehicle road user charge will also be reduced by 16¢ per litre for the same period.

By continuing you agree to our Terms and Privacy Policy.“Today’s decision recognises that despite the welcome and substantial drop in the price of petrol recently, we know people are still under pressure,” Mr Albanese said.
“The 16¢ a litre extension to the fuel tax cut that we’ve announced today will reduce the cost of a 65-litre tank of fuel by around $11.”
Before the US-Iran war, which started in February, the fuel excise was 52¢ per litre for petrol and diesel passenger vehicles and 32¢ per litre for heavy vehicle road users.
In March, the Federal Government announced a halving of the fuel excise tax, and the heavy vehicle road user charge was suspended until June 30. WA’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry led calls to extend the excise cut.
