News and politics recap: Hanson praises Trump’s deportation plan as ‘great way of doing it’

Barnaby Joyce erupted into an outburst during a live television interview by yelling at an off-camera dog.

The One Nation MP appeared on ABC’s 7.30 on Tuesday night to respond to questions about Senator Pauline Hanson’s recent interview with controversial right-wing figure Tommy Robinson, as well as scrutiny over her podcast appearance, comments referencing the White Australia policy and the funding of her trip to a fashion show in Sicily.

As host Sarah Ferguson questioned the former deputy prime minister, the discussion was abruptly derailed by something off camera.

In the middle of answering the question, Mr Joyce turned his head and suddenly yelled “Sit down” in a stern tone.

The outburst momentarily stopped the interview before he explained the reason for the flare-up.

“Sorry, it’s the dog”, he said.

Climate Change Minister Chris Bowen’s department has set aside up to $4.2 million to secure accommodation and meeting facilities at three luxury Fiji resorts ahead of a key pre-COP31 climate summit in October.

Tender documents show bookings have been made across the five-star Sheraton Fiji Golf and Beach Resort, Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa and Radisson Blu Resort Fiji, where Mr Bowen will host international delegates in his role as co-president of the UN climate conference.

The contracts represent the maximum amount the government could spend on the October 5-8 event, with officials saying some foreign delegations, including COP31 host Turkey, are expected to reimburse their own accommodation costs while Australia will cover others.

The government has also indicated some Australian bureaucrats will stay at the same Denarau Island resorts at an additional cost to taxpayers.

The spending comes just weeks after Mr Bowen defended the cost of his COP31 responsibilities, describing them as “good value”.
