Former young-Liberal-turned-MAGA-influencer Nick Adams is no longer in the running to become the US ambassador to Malaysia.

Mr Adams is an American-Australian conservative commentator who previously served as deputy mayor of Ashfield, a suburb in Sydney’s inner west, in 2005.

He was suspended from the state Liberals for six months after media reports revealed his consistent absence at council meetings, as well as his verbal abuse of a Channel 10 journalist in 2009.

He became a naturalised US citizen in 2021.

Mr Adams was picked by US President Donald Trump as the country’s ambassador to Malaysia in July last year but his nomination was never formalised by the Senate and subsequently lapsed.

This, in combination with his absence from later nomination submissions, as reported in Nine newspapers, means he is likely no longer a formal candidate for the job.

As of Sunday evening local time, Mr Adams had posted a cryptic message to Instagram, writing: “Major announcement coming! This week.”

NewsWire has attempted to contact Mr Adams for comment.

Since migrating overseas, Mr Adams has branded himself as a self-styled “alpha male” and “cultural thought leader”.

The former Sydney councillor also describes himself on social media as “President Trump’s favourite author”, seemingly a reference to his 2025 book ‘From Mar-a-Lago to Mars: President Trump’s Great American Comeback’.

Prior to becoming a US citizen, Mr Adams founded an organisation called the Foundation for Liberty and American Greatness in 2016.

It aims to instil conservative values in schoolchildren and promotes “patriotic boycotts” of brands it claims treat “conservative views unfairly”, including the Major League Baseball, Nike, Disney, and the National Basketball Association (NBA).

In July last year, Mr Adams’ nomination had been met with deep concern by Malaysians and triggered protests on the streets of Kuala Lumpur.

His history of disparaging comments about Islam and anti-Palestinian rhetoric were at the centre of demonstrations in the Muslim-majority country which has historically been a staunch supporter of Palestine.
