US President Donald Trump will shortly address Congress after upending US foreign policy, igniting a trade war with close allies, slashing the federal workforce and stretching the limits of presidential power during a dizzying six weeks in office.

The speech, his first to Congress since taking office on January 20, takes place after Mr Trump’s sweeping new tariffs against Mexico, Canada and China drove US markets sharply downward for the second straight day.

Trump attacks Democrats for ‘appalling’ spending

“Just listen to some of the appalling ways we have already identified (savings),” Mr Trump said.

“$22 billion from HHS to provide free cars for illegal aliens, $45 millionfor diversity equity and inclusion scholarships in Burma, $40 million to approve the social and economic inclusion of sedentary migrants. Nobody knows what that is.

Mr Trump listed a string of spending DOGE are working on cancelling.

Trump celebrates oil pipeline project work

“My administration is also working on a gigantic national pipeline in Alaska, among the largest in the world,” Mr Trump said.

“Where Japan, South Korea and other nations want to be a partner with investments of trillions of dollars each.

“There has never been anything like that one. It will be truly spectacular.”

Trump attacks Biden on eggs

“Joe Biden especially let the price of eggs get out of control,” Mr Trump said.

“The egg prices got out of control and we are working hard to get it back down.

“Secretary, do a good job on that. You inherited a total mess from the previous administration. Do a good job.”

‘It is demeaning for women’: Trump’s sport fight

“If you really want to see numbers, just take a look at what happened in the woman’s boxing, track and field, cycling,” Mr Trump said.

“A man recently finished a long distance race five hours and 13 minutes ahead of a woman for a new record by five hours. Broke the record by five hours

“It is demeaning for women and it is bad for our country and we’re not going to put up with any longer.”

Trump takes victory lap with list of achievements

Mr Trump has listed the actions he prioritised first during his second presidency.

Mentioning his freeze of federal hiring and foreign aid, his termination of “green new scams”, withdrawing from the WHO and UN Human Rights Council, Mr Trump celebrated his wins.

He went on to mention renaming the Gulf of Mexico the Guld of America and banning “men from playing women’s sports”, adding “our country will be woke no longer”.

Trump hits out at Democrats for not applauding him

“This isn’t my first such speech to Congress,” Mr Trump said.

“Once again I look at the Democrats in front of me and I realise there is absolutely nothing I can say to make them happy or to make them stand or smile or applaud. Nothing I can do.

“I could find a cure to the most devastating disease, a disease that would wipeout entire nations, or the stoppage of crime to the lowest levels ever recorded, and these people sitting right here, will not clap, will not stand and certainly will not cheer for these astronomical achievements.

“Five times I’ve been up here, it’s very sad.”

Heckler kicked out of House during Trump’s speech

“Members are directed to uphold decorum in the House and cease any further disruption. That’s your warning,” House Speaker Mike Johnson said.

The man, who Mr Johnson called Mr Green, again heckled the president before Mr Johnson kicked him out.

The man was approached by an official who escorted him out.

Chaotic start to Trump’s address

A man believed to be a lawmaker had stood up and heckled President Donald Trump during the first minutes of his address.

Mr Trump’s speech has now been paused.

‘America is back’

“To my fellow citizens, America is back!” Mr Trump said.

“Six weeks ago, I stood beneath the dome of this Capitol, and proclaimed the dawn of the golden age of America.

From that moment on there has been nothing but swift and unrelenting action to usher in the greatest and most successful era in the history of our country.

“We have accomplished more in 43 days than most administrations accomplished in four years or eight years and we’re justgetting started.”

Chants erupt, Democrats remain seated as Trump enters

The divide in US politics was on display as Mr Trump entered the House of Representatives.

Republicans gave the president a standing ovation as the majority of Democrats remained in their seats.

Chants of “USA” filled the room.
