US Vice President JD Vance has announced a surprise visit to Greenland, claiming the US believes it can take the autonomous territory in “a different direction”.

Earlier this week, it was announced Mr Vance’s wife Usha Vance would go to Greenland along with senior Trump Administration officials and now, the second in command is tagging along.

In a video address posted to X, Mr Vance said: “There was so much excitement around Usha’s visit to Greenland this Friday that I decided that I didn’t want her to have all that fun by herself, so I’m going to join her.”

“I’m going to visit some of our guardians in the space force on the north west coast of Greenland and also just check out what’s going on with the security there with Greenland.”

The trip, slammed by some European leaders over President Donald Trump’s comments around annexing the territory, is understood to involve a visit the Pituffik space base, the US military base in Greenland, a tour of historical sites and trip to the national dogsled race.

“A lot of other countries have threatened Greenland,” Mr Vance said.

“Threatened to use it’s territories and waterways to threaten the United States, to threaten Canada and of course, to threaten the people of Greenland.

“So we’re gonna check out how things are going there.”

Mr Vance then spoke on behalf of the United State President, who has for months now shared his desire to make Greenland a US State.

“Speaking for President Trump, we want to reinvigorate the security of the People of Greenland,” he said.

“We think it’s important to protecting the security of the entire world.

“Unfortunately, leaders in both America and in Denmark, I think, ignored Greenland for far too long

“That’s been bad for Greenland, it’s also been bad for the security on the entire world.

“We think we can take things in a different direct, so I’m gonna go check it out.”

Mr Vance, Mrs Vance, White House national security adviser Mike Waltz and Energy Secretary Chris Wright are set to travel to the autonomous territory on Friday.
