Labor keen to ‘work with Trump’ despite past Albo, Rudd digs: Wong

Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong has insisted Australia’s diplomatic ties with the US will remain strong under President-elect Donald Trump, despite senior Labor figures’ past slights about the Republican.

Senator Wong extended her congratulations to Mr Trump after his election victory, telling Sunrise on Thursday morning that Labor “certainly look forward to working with him”.

She insisted the Australian-US alliance would remain strong, despite Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and US Ambassador Kevin Rudd’s past comments about the Republican.

Footage emerged ahead of the election of Mr Albanese saying Mr Trump “scares the sh.t out of me”, while Mr Rudd has pulled no punches when speaking about Mr Trump, calling him “nuts” and a “traitor to the West”.

Ms Wong said the Australian-US alliance is “bigger than any individual or past comments”.

“We have an alliance between two nations that is ground in our big strategic objectives and are great democratic values. That alliance has stood the test of time and is bigger than any individual or past comments,” she said.

Ms Wong said Australians should be “confident in our ability to work together” for the nation’s best interests.

“I know the Vice President isn’t finished in this fight, and I know the very people on this email are also going to be leaders in this collective mission. View this as the beginning, not the end.”

US Justice Department in talks to drop Trump cases

Department of Justice officials are in talks about winding down efforts of federal prosecution of now-President-elect Donald Trump.

Led by special counsel Jack Smith, talks are understood to be underway and will likely take a few days.

The DOJ had been pursuing Mr Trump over allegations he attempted to overturn the 2020 election and that he mishandled highly classified documents.

Mr Trump had expressed his plans to fire Mr Smith if elected. Now, after Mr Trump’s win, the DOJ is unlikely to achieve any prosecution.

Mr Trump became a convicted felon after being found guilty of paying hush money to adult film star Stormy Daniels.

Before election day, sentencing was pushed back to November 26. It is unclear how his election win will impact sentencing.
