Venezuelan Opposition Leader María Corina Machado says she has “presented” US President Donald Trump with her Nobel Peace Prize medal.

“I presented the President of the United States the medal, the Nobel Peace Prize,” Ms Machado said on Thursday (local time) after the pair met at the White House, according to CNN.

“I told him this. Two hundred years ago General Lafayette gave Simón Bolívar a medal with George Washington on it. Bolivar since then kept the medal for the rest of his life.”

“Two hundred years in history, the people of Bolivar are giving the heir of Washington a medal, in this case the medal of the Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of his unique commitment with our freedom.”

While the US President has hinted at feeling overdue for the prize, Ms Machado did not confirm whether the US President accepted the award.

The Norwegian Nobel Institute has previously said that the award is non transferable.
