Renee Good, a mother of three, was shot dead by a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer in Minnesota, approximately one kilometre from where George Floyd was killed in 2020.

A newly emerged video shows the moments before a US immigration agent fatally shot a woman in Minneapolis on Wednesday, capturing the tense interaction that has sparked protests nationwide.

The 47-second clip, filmed by the agent himself and obtained by Minnesota outlet Alpha News, shows 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good sitting behind the wheel of her car while speaking with the officer.

US Vice-President JD Vance shared the footage on social media, claiming the agent acted in self-defence. However, local officials insist Good posed no danger.

Good’s wife has paid tribute to her partner, saying the pair had gone to support their neighbours before the fatal incident. Her death has triggered demonstrations across the country.

The Trump administration said Good tried to run over the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent after blocking the road and obstructing their work. The BBC has requested comment from the Department of Homeland Security and the White House regarding the new video.

The footage begins with the officer getting out of his vehicle, filming Good’s car as he circles it. A dog can be seen in the backseat.

Good says: “That’s fine dude. I’m not mad at you.”

A second woman — believed to be her wife — stands nearby filming the exchange on her phone and appears to tell the ICE agent: “We don’t change our plates every morning... just so you know, it will be the same plate when you come talk to us later.”

She adds: “Do you want to come at us? I say go and get yourself some lunch, big boy.”

Another officer then approaches Good’s driver’s side window, saying: “Get out of the car”.

The filming agent then moves in front of Good’s vehicle as she reverses. In a few chaotic seconds, she turns the wheel right and drives forward. The camera snaps upward and a voice shouts “Woah, woah!” before gunfire is heard.

The final moments show the car veering down the street as an officer swears off-camera.

Earlier footage from other angles shows ICE agents remaining on their feet as the maroon SUV crashed into the roadside. The FBI has since opened an investigation.

When asked about the video on Friday, US President Donald Trump said: “You have agitators and we will always be protecting ICE, and we’re always going to be protecting our border patrol and our law enforcement.”

Mr Vance also reposted the video, writing: “The reality is that his life was endangered and he fired in self-defence.”

White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt echoed that position, saying the media had smeared an agent who had “properly defended himself from being run over.”

Good’s wife, Becca Good, told local reporters the couple had gone to the area to support their neighbours during immigration enforcement activity.

“We had whistles,” she said. “They had guns.”

Speaking about her late wife, she added: “Kindness radiated out of her.”

“We were raising our son to believe that no matter where you come from or what you look like, all of us deserve compassion and kindness.”

Tensions have grown between Minnesota officials and the federal government after the state’s Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) said it was denied access to case evidence. The BCA claimed the FBI initially agreed to a joint investigation before withdrawing the plan.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz accused the Trump administration of obstructing state investigators, while Vice-President Vance said the case falls under federal jurisdiction.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has maintained the ICE agent fired because Good tried to run the officer over. But Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey disputed that account, calling it a “false narrative” and arguing Good appeared to be trying to drive away, not attack.

Protests erupted for a second consecutive night across multiple US cities on Thursday, including Minneapolis, Houston, Cincinnati, Washington DC. and Philadelphia, with demonstrators calling for the abolition of ICE.

Governor Walz said he had activated the National Guard to assist police with public safety during the demonstrations.
