Hamad has known Charles for decades and his family has long-standing ties with the UK royals. In fact, King Hamad and his son Salman, have previously joined the late Queen Elizabeth in her Royal Box at Ascot while Hamad’s late father, Emir Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa, had spent time with the late UK Queen and Prince Philip on the pair’s royal tour of the Middle East in 1979.

Meanwhile another royal from the Middle East has made headlines with comments on the ongoing conflict in the volatile region, with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman describing Israel’s actions in Gaza as “genocide”.

In what is being seen as the strongest condemnation coming from a Saudi official since the start of the 13-month long war, the Prince also used his address at a summit of Muslim and Arab leaders to slam Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government for its aggression against Lebanon and Iran.

The de facto Saudi leader also warned Netanyahu against any further strikes on Iranian soil, a comment seen as further evidence of closer ties between Riyadh and Tehran. Saudi Arabia and Iran have long been viewed as fierce rivals in the region.
