Compensation could be given to thousands of people left ‘disabled’ by the AstraZeneca COVID jab in the UK.

Health Secretary Wes Streeting is believed to be considering setting up a scheme for those with life-changing conditions because of the vaccine.

There is concern the government-funded Vaccine Damage Payment Scheme (VDPS) is struggling to cope with an overwhelming number saying they are suffering from the jab.

Some families from the Vaccine Bereaved and Injured UK group are suing AstraZeneca, which admitted in court documents this year that its COVID vaccine can “in very rare cases” cause a side-effect that leads to blood clots and a low platelet count.

Shadow Attorney General Sir Jeremy Wright, who has met Mr Streeting with campaigners, told The Sunday Telegraph an option is to set up a bespoke compensation scheme.

More than 15,000 have applied for payouts from the VDPS but only 188 have been told they are entitled.
