Apple has announced the launch of a new “affordable” iPhone that “completes the family” of mobile phone products it offers.

“iPhone 16e delivers fast, smooth performance and breakthrough battery life, thanks to the industry-leading efficiency of the A18 chip and the new Apple C1, the first cellular modem designed by Apple,” the tech giant said.

“iPhone 16e is also built for Apple Intelligence, the intuitive personal intelligence system that delivers helpful and relevant intelligence while taking an extraordinary step forward for privacy in AI.”

When does the iPhone 16e come out in Australia?

The new model, which comes with a 6.1-inch display size, will be available in Australia from February 28, with prices starting at $999.

“iPhone 16e packs in the features our users love about the iPhone 16 line-up, including breakthrough battery life, fast performance powered by the latest-generation A18 chip, an innovative 2-in-1 camera system, and Apple Intelligence,” said Kaiann Drance, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide iPhone Product Marketing.

“We’re so excited for iPhone 16e to complete the line-up as a powerful, more affordable option to bring the iPhone experience to even more people.”

World reacts to the Apple iPhone 16e announcement

Online, critics have panned Apple’s announcement of the new iPhone 16e, with thousands of comments saying innovation at Apple is “dead”.

“That’s the most disappointing #AppleLaunch of all time,” one user said on Tim Cook’s X post.

“13 years!!!! of the same thing!!!! In 2012, the iPhone 5 came out, which Steve designed, since then you haven’t done anything cool,” said another.

“Microsoft dropped quantum computing an hour ago and you guys are rebranding the iPhone,” another critic said.

The Apple iPhone 16e is available for pre-order through the Apple website now.
