Apple has introduced a new “piece of cloth” designed for users to carry their iPhones in a stylish way.

The iPhone Pocket, designed by Apple and ISSEY MIYAKE, is a “3D-knitted construction” which is “designed to fit any iPhone as well as all pocketable items”.

Think of it as a stretchy sleeve that hugs your iPhone and expands to stash a few extra everyday items. Apple says it’s versatile enough to be worn however you like, whether that be handheld, dangling from your bag, or strapped to your body.

The accessory is part of a limited edition range, with a short strap version available in eight colours and a long strap design available in three.

And if you’re wondering why this exists, Yoshiyuki Miyamae, design director at MIYAKE DESIGN STUDIO, explains:

“The design of iPhone Pocket speaks to the bond between iPhone and its user, while keeping in mind that an Apple product is designed to be universal in aesthetic and versatile in use.”

Miyamae adds that that Pocket explores the concept of ‘the joy of wearing iPhone in your own way”.

To put it simply, it’s minimalist, artsy and all about personal interpretation.

The late fashion designer previously worked with the tech giant to create Steve Job’s iconic black turtleneck jumpers.

How much is the iPhone Pocket?

Aussies might be relieved to know this launch skips our shores. In markets where it’s available, the iPhone Pocket costs a cool $US149 ($230) for the short strap or $US229 ($350) for the long strap.

Naturally, the internet has had a field day, questioning the price point for what Apple is calling a “piece of cloth”.

“$149.95 for a sock???” one user wrote in response to Apple’s unveiling on social media.

“Yeah, I don’t know about this. What are you doing Apple. I don’t think my iPhone needs a ‘designer strap’,” wrote another.

But others have defended the price, highlighting that a collaboration with a premium designer inevitably means it will cost consumers more.

“Issey Miyake is the designer who made Steve Jobs’ iconic black turtleneck, so it wasn’t a coincidence that they collaborated with Apple on this product,” the user wrote.

“It’s made in Japan with Japanese textiles and labour, so that drives up the cost. It’s meant to be a premium, limited edition version of the regular crossbody strap. It’s not for everyone.”

Meanwhile, some others have poked fun at the Pocket’s “similarity” to Borat’s bright green mankini.

The iPhone Pocket is available for purchase in selected countries from December 14.
