Young deal explained

Here’s Mitchell Woodcock on why the Tyler Young deal makes sense for West Coast.

Serious turnover

A look into how quickly things are changing at West Coast can be illustrated by examining their line-up from last year’s season opener.

Of the 23 players and coach that led the side in last March’s opening game against Port Adelaide, precisely half are no longer at the club, just 18 months on.

The list? Jack Darling, Andrew Gaff, Jeremy McGovern, Jayden Hunt, Tom Barrass, Alex Witherden, Oscar Allen, Jack Petruccelle, Luke Edwards, Campbell Chesser, Callum Jamieson and coach Adam Simpson.

Power on why Brodie’s their man

After locking in Will Brodie today, Port Adelaide list manager Jason Cripps says the club is happy to have added to their midfield depth.

“As a big-bodied midfielder, Will is strong in the contest and will add important depth to our midfield group,” Cripps said.

“Will had his best AFL season in 2022 playing 24 games under Josh Carr as his midfield coach and had the ninth-most clearances in the competition.

“We look forward to him making the most of his opportunity as a Port Adelaide player.”

CJ’s future unclear

As the Hawks assess how well they’re placed to strike on Zach Merrett, Changkuoth Jiath is a name that could be on the move the other way.

Seven’s Mitch Cleary is reporting the 76-gamer is assessing the market amid filling the substitute’s role for all three of Hawthorn’s finals this year.

Ah Chee’s waiting game

Callum Ah Chee’s potential move to Adelaide looks set to come down to the wire.

The dual premiership Lion remains in limbo as Brisbane and the Crows hash out a deal, with the clubs reportedly split on whether he’s worth a first or second-round draft pick.

“We’re obviously very keen to get Callum to the club given he’s expressed an interest to join us,” Crows list manager Justin Reid said on Trade Radio.

“He’s given great service to the Lions and as a childhood Crows fan, we’re excited to bring him into the four walls. We want to strike a deal that’s fair for all parties.”

The Crows are the sole AFL club yet to make a single trade or free agency move across the past fortnight.

McVee in purple

Judd McVee was at Fremantle Oval watching Freo’s epic AFLW win over his old club Melbourne yesterday - and he’s now been shot in purple for the first time.

Can he be the piece that helps take the Dockers deep into September next year?

Young on why Eagles move appeals

Tylar Young has spoken to The West Australian’s Mitchell Woodcock about his move to the Eagles - and how he was pitched to learn off the likes of Jeremy McGovern and Harry Taylor.

“In my first season I was purely just a lockdown defender and that’s all I really thought about but when I did my knee I did some coaching and stuff… I saw avenues that I could explore more and that rebounding, intercepting player I think I can do now,” Young told The West Australian.

“I can use my speed and strength to help get the ball moving. I feel like I can do a bit of both, and whatever ‘Mini’ needs, really, I’m happy to do. Hopefully it’s the best of both worlds.

“’Mini’ has talked about Harry Taylor doing some stuff as well, so sounds like there’s a lot of good ex-guns who can help me grow my game and get that going.”
