AFL trades: Follow all the action from the third-last day of the trade period

It’s the third-last day of the trade period - and it’s time for some of the big deals to get moving!
Zach Merrett, Christian Petracca, Charlie Curnow, Rowan Marshall and Clayton Oliver all remain at their original clubs despite being involved in plenty of trade chatter, but that could all change with just days remaining ahead of Wednesday afternoon’s deadline.
Stay across the latest news and developments here.
Ah Chee’s waiting game
Callum Ah Chee’s potential move to Adelaide looks set to come down to the wire.
The dual premiership Lion remains in limbo as Brisbane and the Crows hash out a deal, with the clubs reportedly split on whether he’s worth a first or second-round draft pick.
“We’re obviously very keen to get Callum to the club given he’s expressed an interest to join us,” Crows list manager Justin Reid said on Trade Radio.
“He’s given great service to the Lions and as a childhood Crows fan, we’re excited to bring him into the four walls. We want to strike a deal that’s fair for all parties.”
The Crows are the sole AFL club yet to make a single trade or free agency move across the past fortnight.

McVee in purple
Judd McVee was at Fremantle Oval watching Freo’s epic AFLW win over his old club Melbourne yesterday - and he’s now been shot in purple for the first time.
Can he be the piece that helps take the Dockers deep into September next year?
Young on why Eagles move appeals
Tylar Young has spoken to The West Australian’s Mitchell Woodcock about his move to the Eagles - and how he was pitched to learn off the likes of Jeremy McGovern and Harry Taylor.
“In my first season I was purely just a lockdown defender and that’s all I really thought about but when I did my knee I did some coaching and stuff… I saw avenues that I could explore more and that rebounding, intercepting player I think I can do now,” Young told The West Australian.
“I can use my speed and strength to help get the ball moving. I feel like I can do a bit of both, and whatever ‘Mini’ needs, really, I’m happy to do. Hopefully it’s the best of both worlds.
“’Mini’ has talked about Harry Taylor doing some stuff as well, so sounds like there’s a lot of good ex-guns who can help me grow my game and get that going.”
Eagle eye on Banfield
Away from the trade action for a moment... West Coast fans would be getting pretty excited about what Charlie Banfield has to offer.
The father-son prospect starred at yesterday’s state draft combine. Read more here.
Behind the scenes of Allen’s Brisbane move
Oscar Allen’s manager Andrew McDougall has revealed Lions list boss Dom Ambrogio reached out to him about the spearhead after premiership forward Joe Daniher retired.
“They were really looking for that Joe Daniher replacement,” he said.
“Joe had some injury concerns when he got there and really performed well and won a premiership.
“We kept in communication through most of the year and it just kept evolving from there.”
Curnow on the move?
Charlie Curnow is reportedly heading to Sydney today to tour the Swans’ facilities, having had a medical assessment with the NSW club.
They’re key steps in the dual Coleman medallist potentially leaving Carlton - a decision he and the club must make pretty quickly, given we’re now just 50-something hours out from Wednesday’s trade deadline.
Curnow would likely have to accept a pay cut, but if the Swans can add to their history of bringing in established spearheads - think Tony Lockett, Barry Hall and Lance Franklin - then they’d loom as a genuine contender next season.
The Blues have already lost Tom De Koning and Jack Silvagni this trade period, as well as shipping out Corey Durdin.
Brodie’s fall from grace
The drop-off for Will Brodie following his superb 2022 campaign has been stark.
Brodie made a huge splash in his debut season at the Dockers after crossing from Gold Coast. The midfielder played every game, and racked up massive numbers to help lead Freo’s finals breakthrough.
At the time, Brodie’s 2022 season marked the following ranks by a Fremantle player:
- Fifth-most disposals in a season (643)
- Fifth-most tackles in a season (127)
- Ninth-most clearances in a season (137)
But he’d go on to play just five games inside the opening two months of the following season in 2023, and hasn’t featured at the top level since.
Can the 27-year-old get a new lease on AFL life in Port’s midfield under Josh Carr?

DONE DEAL: Freo ship Brodie to Power
Will Brodie gets his wish, with the Dockers’ depth midfielder landing at Port Adelaide.
As revealed by The West Australian, Brodie will be sent to the Power for a sixth-round pick that currently sits at No.103.
Freo are unlikely to use that selection, with the midfielder’s exit to the Power clearing up a second spot on their main list ahead of next month’s draft, and most importantly, some valuable salary-cap space.
Eagles on Young
Here’s West Coast list manager Matt Clarke on the Eagles’ acquisition of Tylar Young from Richmond:
“We’re really pleased to bring Tylar into our football club and believe he can make an immediate impact for us next season,” Clarke said.
“Tylar is a strong-bodied and mature key defender who our coach Andrew McQualter knows well from their time together.
“With his size and stature, he is capable of competing against the AFL’s power forwards and he will complement our existing defensive stocks.”
Most and least active clubs
After their move to land Tylar Young, West Coast are now the equal-busiest club of the trade and free agency period so far.
In terms of being involved in a trade, a free agent acquisition, or losing a free agent, the Eagles have been a part of five different moves this month.
St Kilda and Carlton have also been involved in five, with Melbourne on four and Freo, Brisbane and Gold Coast on three.
At the other end of the scale, Adelaide is the sole club who is yet to be a part of a single move so far.
