Two Hawthorn players crashed into each other and one came off second best.

Hawthorn defender Jack Scrimshaw came from the field with blood pouring from his face after a collision with teammate Josh Battle during their AFL clash with Essendon on Friday night.

Scrimshaw walked off unassisted but headed straight into the rooms where he was assessed by Hawks medical staff, who took less than 10 minutes to sub him out of the game with concussion.

There is also concern for his nose, which was the source of the flowing blood, and will be scanned for any breaks.

Scrimshaw was trailing his direct opponent up towards the ball, which had been kicked into Essendon’s forward 50 from a stoppage in the middle of the ground, while Battle was running back with the flight of the ball towards the Bombers’ goal.

The ball bounced just out of Battle’s reach, and fell in the hands of Scrimshaw’s opponent Sam Durham, who dished off a handball to Kyle Langford.

Durham fortuitously escaped the Hawthorn defender sandwich as Battle and Scrimshaw crashed into each other head-on.

Battle was able to bounce back up but the same couldn’t be said for Scrimshaw, who stayed down as medical staff surrounded him while he bled profusely.

“Jack Scrimshaw is down and bloodied. He looks in discomfort,” Alister Nicholson said on commentary.

“He’s got the trainers with him as they try to bring that bleeding to a halt.”

Scrimshaw eventually got up and walked off with a bloodied towel covering his nose.

Matthew Richardson added: “Gee, that’s not good for Scrimshaw.

“Glad that he’s up and walking off but he’s in trouble with that beak there. Never pleasant.”

7NEWS Melbourne’s Xander McGuire provided an update for Scrimshaw at half time.

Just a few minutes ago, he came into the rooms after he failed that head injury assessment — already a massive egg and shiner on the left side of his face,” he said.

“But the good news is they’ve managed to stem the bleeding, so no more blood coming from his nose as he walked into the rooms.

“He’s gone in there, he’s still in the hands of doctors.”

Essendon were later dealt a concussion problem of their own, with star defender subbed out of the game after a head knock.
