RECAP: Brisbane beat spirited West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium

Hutchinson is coming straight to the bench after missing a set shot from the pocket.

West Coast in their throwback Ochre, which is controversial enough, but the Lions have gone for the mustard and maroon.

I’m sure some fans will have strong feelings about those two.

West Coast’s previous two meeting with Brisbane have ended in 16 and 13-point losses.

The Lions enter this one off the back of five straight wins while the Eagles have had five straight losses.

There’s a fair bit of crossover history between clubs this evening.

Brandon Starcevich goes up against his old club for the first time tonight, so he’ll no doubt be feeling the pressure to perform.

Oscar Allen and Deven Robertson are two others who similarly made the move between clubs across the off-season. Allen failed to make the trip west having only just recovered from injury, while Robertson is out for the season - having hurt his knee the last time the Eagles wore the ochre jumper in Gather Round. He’s out on the turf chatting with some old teammates and Brisbane personnel.

West Coast will be in their throwback ochre kits tonight.

And while that’s a nice nostalgiac throwback for some, it’s bad memories of a rough era for others - and the stats bear that out.

The Eagles have an all-time record of 2 wins, 1 draw and 15 losses while wearing the jumper. Can they flip the script on that trend tonight, or will it be more of the same?

The final team line-ups are in as we move inside 60 minutes before the opening ball-up - and there’s no late changes for either side.

It means the Eagles are unchanged for a second straight game for the first time since all the way back in 2007. Fairly remarkable for a side on a five-game losing streak!

As West Coast players get in some last shots at goal before heading back to the rooms, Brisbane players are making their way out onto the ground - which remains dry for now.

It’s been fairly gloomy at Optus Stadium for much of the afternoon, and there’s an ominous looking cloud sprawling above the playing arena now.

But the forecast assures us that rain won’t be an issue.

Eagles players are on the surface now, and it’s a surface that has certainly seen better days. There’s a few sandy spots even away from the troublesome north-west pocket, and the centre circle has been freshly relaid for this match.

Reuben Ginbey is one of those in blue-and-gold that’s out on the turf, but of course only watching on rather than warming up. He’s still hopeful of a return for the final game or two of West Coast’s season.

But the Eagles are unchanged and will take some confidence out of pushing the Western Bulldogs right to the end on the road last week before ultimately falling short.
