Man charged after AFL umpire hit in head with bottle

A man has been charged with unlawful assault and recklessly causing injury after a bottle hit an AFL umpire during a match, forcing him off the field.

Footage from the television broadcast showed a plastic bottle filled with liquid strike the the back of goal umpire Steven Piperno’s head during the clash between Carlton and St Kilda at Marvel Stadium in Melbourne on Sunday.

Piperno clutched the back of his head and was later replaced by an emergency umpire after he left the ground.

A Northcote man, 23, was on Tuesday interviewed and charged with recklessly causing injury, discharging a missile and unlawful assault.

Victoria Police said investigators identified the man and he went a police station by appointment

He is due to face court on November 1.
