Nick Daicos and Collingwood’s bevy of recruits have given an exciting glimpse of their potential with a thumping 83-point AFL pre-season win over Richmond.

The Magpies started fast at Ikon Park, kicking six of the first seven goals, and never looked back to easily post a 21.6 (132) to 6.13 (49) win in front of 7812 fans in Wednesday night’s Charity Shield match.

Newly minted vice-captain Daicos was clearly the best player on the ground in Collingwood’s last hitout before next Sunday’s opening-round clash with GWS.

He looked concerned over his left knee late in the second term but played on and had 22 disposals and eight score involvements by half-time.

When he was rested midway through the third quarter, Daicos had 32 disposals, 11 score involvements, eight tackles and six clearances, while Patrick Lipinski finished with 37 touches.

Discarded Saint Tim Membrey provided a presence up forward, kicking four goals along with Brody Mihocek and Bobby Hill.

Boom recruit Dan Houston (22 disposals) gave a glimpse of what he can deliver off half-back, dobbing a trademark long-range goal on the run in the first quarter.

Houston, who is suspended for round one, was feeling for his right quad after a tackle on Steely Green late in the term but played out the game.

Fellow recruit Harry Perryman (10 tackles, 20 disposals) delivered grunt around the contest and kicked a goal.

Brayden Maynard (foot), Jordan De Goey (knee) and Mason Cox (finger) were Collingwood’s big-name absentees.

Last year’s wooden spooners Richmond, who kick off their season against Carlton on March 13, were without Tom Lynch (concussion), Dion Prestia (achilles), Sam Lalor (jaw), Josh Smillie (hamstring) and Hugo Ralphsmith (hamstring).

Skipper Toby Nankervis (22 disposals, 28 hitouts), Jacob Hopper (31 touches) and Jayden Short (22) were prolific, while Jacob Bauer kicked two goals.

But there were some concerning signs for Adem Yze’s charges, who were disjointed and often sluggish when Collingwood played on quickly close to goal.

Nick Daicos dobbed a short pass to Hill for the opening goal and from there Collingwood eased out to a 23-point lead at the first change, then extended the margin to 45 at half-time.

Collingwood kicked three goals inside the opening four minutes of the third quarter and nudged their lead out to 75 at three-quarter time, before closing out the game.
