AFL PLAYER BANS FOR HOMOPHOBIC REMARKS:-

* Jeremy Finlayson: three games (April, 2024)

The first player suspended for using homophobic language. Finlayson’s ensuing comments on a podcast raised eyebrows, but the Port Adelaide star clarified he had “no issue with the sanction at all”.

* Wil Powell: five games (May, 2024)

The Gold Coast defender appealed for forgiveness after “instantly” regretting a sledge directed at a Brisbane opponent. The AFL explained the ban was longer than Finlayson’s because of the proximity of the incidents, having put everyone on notice publicly and privately.

* Jack Graham: four games (July, 2025)

The incident was self-reported by Graham to his club, who reported it to the AFL. The league said it took into account Graham’s self-reporting, along with his private apology and contrition. Graham also rang the AFL chief executive directly to apologise.

The Game AFLW 2025

* Izak Rankine: four games (August, 2025)

The AFL factored in “compelling medical submissions” as it finalised its punishment for Rankine’s comment directed at a Collingwood player. The Crows star said in a statement he is “deeply sorry”.

NB: AFL-listed players Riak Andrew (five games, 2025) and Lance Collard (six games, 2024) were suspended after making comments at VFL level.
