West Coast’s rebuild has been boosted by West Australian-born Geelong premiership hero Mitch Duncan joining its coaching staff.

The 34-year-old had long been linked to the Eagles before he announced his retirement ahead of the 2025 finals series.

While he stayed with the Cats until their grand final loss, his Mad Monday outfit — an Eagles polo and cap with a whistle — all but confirmed the move.

The 305-game veteran joins as a backline coach, with his experience sorely needed to help develop their young stocks following the departures of Tom Barrass and Jeremy McGovern in the past two seasons.

“Mitch is a fantastic addition to our coaching team and a great fit for the direction we’re heading as a football club,” general manager football Gavin Bell said.

“His experience and calm, thoughtful approach will connect strongly with our developing playing group.

“Mitch’s ability to mentor and build meaningful relationships, combined with his leadership, will be valuable as we strive for progress in 2026 and beyond.”

Duncan joins a new-look assistant panel following the addition of midfield Sam Radford and marks a return home for the East Perth product.

He brings a wealth of experience, having been a part of Cats’ premierships in 2011 and 2020 and featured in a whopping 28 finals matches - the equal eighth-highest tally of any player in the AFL era.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity to join the West Coast Eagles and be part of an exciting new chapter for the Club,” Duncan said.

“I’m really looking forward to working with a talented playing group and contributing to their development. There’s optimism around the direction the Club is heading, and I’m keen to get started and help drive that growth.

“I’m excited to work under Andrew McQualter and continue expanding my own coaching journey. It’s great to be back home in WA and I’m grateful for the opportunity.

“It’ll be a challenge convincing my kids to swap their Geelong colours for blue and gold, but I’m sure they’ll come around!”
