West Coast coach Andrew McQualter has faced plenty of challenges as both a player and coach – but having to answer a persistent Collingwood fan over Dom Sheed’s match winning goal in the 2018 grand final wouldn’t have been on his list of “what ifs” when he woke up this morning.

McQualter was doing his weekly press conference at Perth airport on Friday morning when he paused to allow an announcement through the airport speakers to finish. That break was all a nearby Collingwood fan needed to insert himself into the fray.

“Do you think Maynard was blocked in the 2018 grand final?” the man asked.

The Magpie engaged in a contest with Willi Rioli, which many Collingwood fans think should have been a free kick.

Perplexed by the question, given he was working for Richmond as an assistant coach at the time, McQualter wasn’t sure what to say. But he attempted to handle the moment by being polite.

“This is actually not bad. We’ve actually got a punter here…look, it’s a great question mate. I’ll probably leave it to the Collingwood coach to deal with that one,” he said.

But the man remained determined and threw out more questions.

“I think he was blocked. Can we just admit it please? We were robbed,” he said.

McQualter again took the polite path as he attempted to get his focus back onto questions about the team’s upcoming clash with Greater Western Sydney.

“It’s all good mate. You’re good mate Thanks for your time,” he said.

West Coast don’t play against Collingwood until round 16 but that game is in Victoria so time will tell whether the man turns up at the airport then to ask questions again.
