Cameron McEvoy: Australian Olympic gold medallist pumps out new PB in freestyle swimming

He’s already the fastest man through water in the world. And the Aussie Olympic gold medallist is getting even quicker.

He’s already the fastest man through water in the world.

And the Aussie Olympic gold medallist is getting even quicker.

In an ominous warning shot just days out from the Commonwealth Games, Australia’s 50-metre splash-and-dash specialist has recorded a personal best time at a training camp that will have the rest of the swimming world quaking in their boots.

Cameron McEvoy — already the world record holder for the 50m sprint event with a time of 20.88 seconds — revealed he hit a new personal best during the Dolphins’ training camp in Germany over 35m, a distance used in refined sessions.

“It was a training PB actually, which is always what you want — and just four days off the back of a trip from Australia to Europe which is really nice,” he said.

“I’m moving well. It’s now time to kick back and relax and let the rest of it come up in its own time.”

It signals the 32-year-old is on track to break his own record in Glasgow and win his first individual Commonwealth Games gold medal.

McEvoy missed the last event in Birmingham four years ago as part of a mid-year sabbatical, after which he decided to dedicate his career to the shortest discipline in the sport.

The Queenslander is one of Australia’s brightest medal chances in the swimming program, which will run across the first six days of the Games from Friday night (AWST) at the Tollcross International Swimming Centre.

Fellow Queensland product Sam Short will also head to Glasgow in sizzling form and Channel Seven expert Ariarne Titmus has declared could complete one of the best campaigns Australian sport has ever seen.

At last month’s Australian trials, Short became the first man since Grant Hackett in 2005 to win the 200m, 400m, 800m and 1500m freestyle events.

“He’s been on the national team for four years now, but he’s probably flown under the radar,” Titmus told The West Australian.

“He’d had an unbelievable trials. He won the 200 freestyle all the way through to the 1500 freestyle, which is incredibly tough to do, and was within a tenth of a second of Ian Thorpe’s Australian 400 freestyle record, which hasn’t been touched for 25 years.

“If he can get near that record and has the potential to win the 400, 800 and 1500 freestyle events at these Games, I think that would be an unreal feat in Australian sport history.”

McEvoy said this Dolphins squad features young guns that will be household names by the time the Olympics head to Brisbane in 2032.

“The depth we have on the team right now is incredible,” he said.

“We have a lot of kids coming through who are rookies on the team and a lot of young kids who are ranking really well in the world, not just currently but looking ahead to Brisbane 2032.”
