The Diamonds have lost their first ever semi-final match in the Commonwealth Games in a buzzer beater upset against Jamaica.

A It came down to a penalty shot with no time left on the clock, but a catastrophic miss from Sophie Dwyer ended their dominant run in the 45-46 loss.

Kate Moloney was at a loss for words after the “super disappointing” loss.

“It hasn’t quite sunk in yet,” she said post match.

“Credit to Jamaica, they were great today.”

The top side were on the back foot the entire match, not holding a lead until the fourth quarter - but costly blunders saw them trail in the dying minutes of the game.

That was until a brilliant efforts from West Aussie Courtney Bruce provided a spark for the Diamonds, cutting the difference to one point with 40 seconds to play.

Tension ran high in the arena after the Diamonds received a penalty after time had expired, setting up the shot that Commonwealth Games debutant Dwyer won’t forget anytime soon - for all the wrong reasons.

Perth’s Sophie Garbin has been automatic all tournament, but coach Stacey Marinkovich made the bold switch to put her on the bench after the first quarter and she didn’t see game time again.

Kiera Austin led the scoring for the Diamonds with 22 goals off 23 attempts at 96 per cent efficiency, while Cara Koenen sunk 18 off 20.

It was a heavily skewed game on the whistle, the Diamonds had 86 penalties called against them to Jamaica’s 60.

The high pressure game had Australia stunned early, and the intensity was high - Bruce copped an early elbow to the head from Jamaica’s Romelda Aiken-George.

It was a game of margins and the Aussies had to claw back after being down by as much as five at times, and couldn’t build a lead of their own.

The shocking upset leaves Australia playing for bronze against England while Jamaica will go on to face New Zealand for the gold medal.
